IESD 2018 Group at the Mutianyu Great Wall

On 24 May, 2019, a three-day cultural trip to Beijing, the capital city of the People’s Republic of China, was organized by IESD for the diverse group of 2018 Master Students who originate from over 15 different countries around globe – Algeria, Benin, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela among others.

The trip aimed to foster learning and convey the important thoughts of Chairman Xi Jinping about youth work, the spirit of the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as well as the Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Youth League. The trip has inspired the international students to know more about China and understand the people and culture and thus foster a truly authentic "perception of China".

Students were impressed by the marriage of modern and traditional architecture and highly praised the great respect and care for preservation of the ancient history of this long-standing nation. This trip provided an immersion into the history, the architecture, the culture and the cuisine of Beijing which was found to have its own unique charm.

Apart from visiting historic sites such as the Mutianyu Great Wall , the students tried their hands at making their very own Beijing Opera masks. Beijing Opera of China is a national treasure with a history of 200 years. Beijing Opera is the most significant of all operas in China, and it has a richness of repertoire that give it a profound influence in China and plays a large role in Chinese culture.

The Beijing experience continued with visits to the Olympic stadium which features the magnificent architectural structures of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube. The designers of the Bird’s Nest stadium exposed the steel structures entirely and let them become the most natural appearance. The form of the stadium looks like a big nest which embraces and nurses human beings. The Water Cube Olympic swimming pool design combines modern technologies with Chinese traditional values. In tradition, Chinese conceptualized a square Earth and a round Heaven, and this formed the design's central theme.

The IESD students enjoyed the sites of Beijing and received an opportunity to become fully immersed in the rich traditions which have merged with the modern city life that shapes Beijing into the bustling capital that it is. Tian’anmen Square, the Palace Museum formerly known as the “Forbidden City”, NanLuogu Lane – one of the oldest alleyways in Beijing; and the Beijing Capital Museum were among the iconic sites visited. Beijing is a truly regal city with magnificent history and warm people.
