Prof. WU Qidi
        Member of Standing Committee, 11th National People’s Congress of China Member of the Education, Science, Culture and Health Committee, NPC of China Vice Minister of Ministry of Education of China (2003-2008)

Prof. WU Qidi worked at Tongji University as Professor of Automatic Control, Deputy Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Assistant President, Vice President and President of Tongji University from May 1986 to June 2003. She was elected to be President of Tongji University in 1995 and became the first university president through democratic election in China. 

Prof. WU Obtained her BSc in Radio Engineering from the Department of Radio and Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University, China, her MSc in Automatic Control from the Department of Precision Instrument, Tsinghua University, China and her Ph.D. in Automation from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. She does academic research in control theory and intelligent system for many years. She published more than 200 academic papers, wrote and translated seven books and completed over thirty research projects, seven of which won Provincial, Ministerial and State awards.

Because of her outstanding work, she was rewarded with a number of awards including an Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert Award from the Ministry of Personnel in 1996; an Excellent Overseas Returned Scholar Award in 1997 and a National Ten Outstanding Women Award in 1998. The German Federal Government awarded her with Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1999.

Professor WU is also active in social and academic activities and takes a number of positions for both academic and social societies. She works concurrently as Vice Chairperson of All-China Women’s Federation,Member of Degree Awarding Committee of the State Council, Vice Chairperson of Shanghai Association of Science and Technology, Member of Chinese Association of Automation and a senior member of IEEE. She was a Member of the Seventh and Eighth Shanghai Municipal Party Committee of CPC. She was an alternate member of the Sixteenth Central Committee of CPC and now she is Member of Standing Committee, National People’s Congress of China.
