Mahesh has over 20 years of experience with UNEP, previously serving as the Regional Environmental Affairs Officer for Asia and the Pacific, based in Bangkok, Thailand.In 2009, he was assigned as Interim Director of the AIT-UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC. AP), which is located at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Pathumthani, Thailand. At RRC.AP, focus was on regional support, network support, knowledge support and cross-cutting institutional support. RRC.AP served as the Secretariat for a Collaborative Action Network (CAN), which brought together more than 40 partners from across the Asia Pacific region engaged in environment and sustainable development issues.

He has been based at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi since January 2011 and served as the Chief of Environment Education and Training Unit at UNEP Headquarters and now work at UNEP International Environmental Technology Center (IETC) based in Osaka, Japan.
