On 2ndof September, 2024, the International Students Alumni Meeting of the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) was held successfully in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, with the participation of the Vice Dean of College of Environmental Science and Engineering and IESD, Prof. Wang Ying, Admission Coordinator, Mr. Yang Xiaolei, as well as 12 alumni from Kenya, Uganda and other countries.
At the beginning of the event, Prof. Wang firstly expressed her sincere thanks to the alumni for their presence. She reviewed the history of development and achievements of the college in recent years, and expressed her high praise and deep concern for the excellent results achieved by IESD alumni. She emphasized that alumni are the most valuable wealth of the college, and the college always cares about and supports the growth and development of every alumnus. She looked forward to further deepening the contact with alumni through this meeting, promoting resource sharing and contributing to the development of the college and even the society together.Subsequently, the alumni representatives recalled the memories during their school years and shared their learning, working and living experiences in Kenya, as well as their post-graduation working experiences and insights. Participating alumni generally work in government departments, scientific research institutions and large-scale enterprises. Karanja Ayub k (employee of the Ministry of lands, public works, housing and urban development of Kenya), alumni representative of the class of 2015, shared his career experience, and he was very grateful to the Ministry of Commerce program and Tongji University for the learning opportunities provided by this invaluable learning experience so that he can make progress in his work, and continue to make contributions to the development of the national environmental cause. Micah Kipleting (Senior Manager, Kapsabet Nandi Water and Sanitation Company, Kenya), alumni representative of the class of 2020, talked about the valuable time he spent studying in Tongji University, which not only allowed him to gain and consolidate professional knowledge and skills, but also laid a solid theoretical foundation for his current work. He wished his alma mater and IESD will have a better future. In addition, the alumni also put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on how to strengthen the exchange and cooperation between IESD and Africa in the field of environment and sustainable development, and the atmosphere was warm and cozy.Finally, on behalf of the College, Prof. Wang presented souvenirs to the alumni and expressed her best wishes for their future. She encouraged the alumni to continue to carry forward the spirit of Tongji, be courageous, and make greater contributions to the promotion of friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Kenya and even China-Africa.
