The Third Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development was successfully convened in IESD from 18 to 24 September 2006, with 27 participants from 18 countries Asia and the Pacific. This year’s Leadership Programme was meaningful with diverse associated events.
The Programme consisted of 4 parts: Human Dimension, Environment Dimension, Sustainable Development Dimension, and Synthesis. There was also a field trip in Wuxi, a city adjacent to Taihu Lake, Jiangsu Province. In the Human Dimension and Environment Dimension, participants were introduced to wide-ranging issues from basics to advanced knowledge, with brief introduction on the Human concepts – mind, body and soul – and on the Environment - Air/Water/Land. Then the Programme moved to Wuxi, a historic and fast developing city. By visiting the Suntech Power Limited (a company for solar energy utilization) and the Li Lake Exhibition Center, the participants got the background information of Wuxi’s modern development plan. Based on the field trip, in the Sustainable Dimension module, group discussions were organized by the resource persons for the participants to scope sustainability issues and solutions. On the last day of program, participants actively participated in the Pyramid Exercise to synthesize the knowledge learned from the various modules. At the closing, the participants received certificates from the IESD. A main feature at the closing was that the participants formulated a statement for sustainable development, titled the “Wuxi Commitment.”
