The 6th IESD-HSBC Leadership Program on Environment for Sustainable Development
Co-organized by Tongji University and HSBC
Focusing on low-carbon economic and urban sustainable development

The 6th IESD-HSBC Leadership Program on Environment for Sustainable Development, focusing on low-carbon economic and urban sustainable development was successfully jointly held by UNEP-Tongji Institute of environment for sustainable development (IESD) and HSBC on December 11, 2008. Professor ZHU Dajian, Head of Department of Management Science and Engineering, director of Institute of Sustainable Development and Management at Tongji University,  Shanghai, was invited to give a lecture on low-carbon economic and urban sustainable development.
24 representatives of government, enterprise and media from 11 different cities and provinces attended the seminar. During the 3-day training, experts in environmental areas from Tongji University, Fudan University and HSBC China provided series courses on the theme of low-carbon economic and urban sustainable development from the viewpoint of making policies, doing researches and practicing in enterprises. The training has created a new mode of seminar that is held by government, university and enterprise together. 

In the welcome speech of the seminar, the CEO of HSBC (China) Mr. Richard Yorke said “We are very grateful to gather on this significant day, hold this seminar on low-carbon economic and urban sustainable development with Tongji University. HSBC has been regarding promoting environmental protection as the key point of its social duty for a long time. We have been continuously putting efforts in reducing and eliminating the Carbon dioxide emission to help solving the climate change problem. It is the exact reason for us to formally start the sponsor program of Carbon dioxide emission reduction research program of Tongji University in March, 2007.

In the seminar, Professor ZHU Dajian from School of Economics and Management of Tongji University discussed about China’s Policy on low-carbon economic with participants and students from Tongji University. Professor Zhu was a senior research scholar at Harvard University in 2004-2005 and a visiting research fellow at Melbourne University in 1994-1995. He has involved in several important research projects from international organizations such as UNDP, UNEP, WB, ADB, etc. and published three books and more than 200 papers and articles. He is the writer of “Manage the Urban development”, chief editor of “China’s Cycle Economic and Sustainable Development”,“ New Mode of Policy Analysis”, “Shanghai Urban Development” and “2010 World Expo”, and “Blue Book of Shanghai Environment Resources”, and translator of “management of urban solid waste??from a life cycle perspective”、 “surpass development??economics of sustainable development”、 “capital of the nature” etc.
“Carbon Reduction Emission Comprehensive Response Mechanism of Typical Cities on Lower Reaches of Yangzi River Research Program”, the second-year result of a research program sponsored by HSBC (China), conducted by IESD since last year, was published on this seminar.

IESD-HSBC Leadership Program on Environment for Sustainable Development was started in 2006,sponsored by HSBC(China),with its purpose of supporting China’s environment protection and improving the conscious of environment protection and sustainable development for future leaders. The IESD-HSBC Leadership Program was held twice a year, three days each. Well known environment issue specialist from both abroad and domestic were invited to give lectures on latest issues on scientific sustainable development to improve decision-making ability of future leaders. Till now, about 150 environment protection officials, enterprise representatives, NGO members and media representatives have attended the seminar.
