Five Tongji students will be learning and working in the Watershed Management Section, The Department of Environmental Quality, Oregon, USA.They are: Jiayu Shen, Xi Du, Xixi Wang, Zaoli Gu and Zijun Shen (Clark). They started their internships this week and will complete their internships by the end of July.
These students come to us from a Portland State University Environmental Science & Management exchange program with Tongji University in Shanghai China. The students are:
Jiayu - She is a sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering Water Supply. Prior to coming to Portland as part of the exchange program, Jiayu had lived her entire life in the city of Shanghai which is a major metropolitan area with over 17 million residents. Jiayu likes travelling, writing and photography She is still deciding on her long term plans but because of her interest in technical water quality issues such as GIS and water quality modeling, she is considering attending graduate school. She will be working with Dan Turner on the use of satellite data for identifying water quality problems in Cascade Lakes.
Xi - She is a sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering. Xi's hometown is also the city of Shanghai which has a mix of modern and ancient architecture. She is interested in wastewater treatment, water quality modeling, and removal of pollutants in water/wastewater. She hopes to learn about GIS, application of the TMDL process, and other information about water management. She will be working with Dan Turner on the use of satellite data for identifying water quality problems in Cascade Lakes.
Xixi - She is a sophomore majoring in Environmental Science. Xixi's hometown is the city of Bei'an in Heilongjiang Province, which is located in the northeast of China. She believes "History is a mirror to the future". She is interested in analyzing existing data and then using it to forecast future conditions. She is especially interested in financial markets. She will be working with Agnes Lut on the Willamette Phase 2 Mercury TMDL gaining additional expertise in the use of R-software for statistical analysis which she plans to use later in her career for analyzing financial data.
Zaoli - He is a sophomore majoring in Environmental Engineering. Zaoli's hometown is Suzhou, which is near Taihu Lake. It's a very scenic city with a long history of 5,000 years, but currently suffers from some severe environmental problems, especially eutrophication of Taihu Lake. Zaoli would like to work to restore the beautiful looks of his hometown. With this in mind he is interested in modeling of environmental issues. He will be working with Kevin Brannan on the use of GIS and water quality modeling for development of the Crooked River basin bacteria TMDL.
Clark - He is a sophomore majoring in Environmental Engineering. Clark is from Shanghai which is located on the Huangpu River at the confluence with the Yangtze River just before it enters the Pacific Ocean. Clark is interested in water quality management and water & wastewater treatment. He is interested in learning more about the methods used for evaluating and assessing water quality and the methods used for sample collection and analysis. He will be working with Kevin Brannan on the use of GIS and water quality modeling for development of the Crooked River basin bacteria TMDL.
