Prof. Pei Gang Delivered a Lecture on 'Sustainable Development and Future'

In April 5th evening, on public class----the Sustainable development and future VII Prof. Pei Gang, President of Tongji University, gave a lecture on "life science and sustainable development" to hundreds of teachers and students in conference hall 101of Jiading campus.

The excellent lecture attracted active participation of of Jiading hundreds of teachers and students, even the aisles at the venue filled with admiring students. Meantime, in Auditorium129, Siping Road Campus, the video was set up lively to interact instantly.

 

President Pei Gang set Chinese architect Wang Shu, the alumni of Tongji University, who recently won the Pritzker Prize for advocating concept of harmonious and sustainable development between human and buildings as example, described the goal of sustainable development, relationship between sustainable development and life, and philosophy of man and nature should be in harmony. Sustainable development has long been the basic concept and strong driving force for the disciplinary development of Tongji University. President Pei Gang also expected Tongji students to make more contributions to the sustainable development of human society.

 

President Pei Gang, as an eminent scholar of cell biology in China, attended the recently concluded Boao Forum for Asia 2012 entitled as “Asia: Coming together for Sound and Sustainable Development”. He conveyed the important message of sound and sustainable development in his lecture, highlighting that the development of life sciences can be considered as the harmonious development of people-orientation and the foundation of human development. Furthermore, President Pei provided detailed examples and profound analysis on social sustainable issues such as economy, culture and environment, etc. His wonderful speech was greeted by a storm of applauses from all the faculties and students present. In the end, President Pei interacted with students both from Jiangding and Siping campuses by answering their questions.

 

President Pei noted that the general lecture, Sustainable Development and Future, aims at encouraging disciplinary intersection and enabling students to value the significance and philosophy of sustainable development, with the purpose of developing Tongji into a university that shoulders the responsibility of sustainable development.

At the end of his lecture, President Pei pinned great hopes for students in Tongji to take challenges and work hard. He hopes that all the teachers and students could shake off utilitarianism and fickleness and be earnest, down-to-earth and united in a bid to build an ivory tower featured by sustainable development so that we could nourish our souls and achieve genuine happiness of life.
