The Institute for Strategic Research and Education (ISIE) researches win NSF PIRE grant with a focus on “Developing Low-Carbon Cities in the USA, China & India through Inter-Disciplinary Integration Across Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences & Public Health”. This PIRE project is a collaboration among 4 Chinese universities or institutes including Tongji University, 6 US institutions and 5 Indian universities or NGOs.
This PIRE project will develop a transformative international research, education and outreach program to assist in the development of low-carbon, resource-efficient and healthy cities in the US, China and India-these three nations, together, contribute 50% of global fossil fuel-use and greenhouse gas emissions and focus specifically on Asian cities in transition – i.e., small rapidly industrializing cities in Asia that are expected to dominate future urbanization, comparing their development trajectories with those of megacities and smaller service economy cities in the US.
The PIRE will also develop a first-of-its-kind International Summer School and MS Program on Sustainable Infrastructure-Sustainable Cities offered to cohorts of graduate students from all three nations drawn from six major disciplines: Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Industrial Ecology, Urban Planning, Public Affairs and Public Health.
