Asian Scholars Gathered in Tongji University to Discuss
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Higher Education
From May 20 to 21, nearly 30 scholars and government officials from higher education institutions, such as universities, research institutes,
government educational sector of Asian countries --Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and China gathered in Tongji University to discuss education
for sustainable development (ESD) in the higher education system. Mahesh Pradhan -- UNEP consultant representative, Frans Lenglet -- the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and the Swedish NIRÁS company observer representative, and Wu Jiang -- Vice President of Tongji University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.
The conference is funded by the Swedish International Development Fund. UNEP - Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) organized the conference and invited reprentatives selected from
previous participants (more than a hundred Asian students) in SIDA International Training Programme on Education for Sustainable
Development (SIDA ITP ESD). The conference is a summary of a-decade (2004-2013)’s outcomes from implementation of ESD in Asian higher education system. The praticipants focused on achievements of ESD in
three areas, namely, curriculum development, campus construction and community service. And they shared their feelings about
the impacts of ESD on individual, unit, region, country and even the world. The delegates all expressed their wishes to have more
opportunities to gather together and witness ESD achievements in the future. The confernce was concluded in a great success.
