Tongji Delegation Attended 2012 World Student Summit for Sustainability

2012 World Student Summit for Sustainability was held from November 12th to 16th, 2012, in the Multimedia University, Nairobi, Kenya. The summit is organized by the World Student Community for Sustainable Development (WSCSD) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)’s Environmental Education and Training Unit and the University of Nairobi. Ms. Yang Lu and Ms. Huang zujing, undergraduate students from College of Environment Science and Engineering attended this summit as student representatives from Tongji University.


The general concept for the summit “Student Leadership and Innovation towards a Green Economy” attracted the participation of representatives of more than 140 students all over the world. A variety of workshops on Food, Water, Energy, Waste and Transport were held. Some world-renowned professors in the field of sustainable development gave speeches for the delegates, such as Dr. Maria Veludo, the Project Developer for the Methoddo E-Learning Platform, France, IESEG Business School and Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, the Secretary/CEO, National Council For Science and Technology.

During the summit, the delegates visited the United Nations Environment Programme Headquarters and listened to lectures about sustainable development. And the delegates also conducted field trip to Kibera Slums together, which made them have a new understanding of "development" and "Environment Protection".


Two representatives of Tongji actively participated in the discussions and showed the concept of water cycle and the practical results of Tongji University on green campus, which was highly appreciated by the organizer and the representatives of other international students.
