On February 4, Prof. WU Jiang, Vice President of Tongji University and Dean of IESD, Prof. LI Fengting, Vice Dean of IESD visited UNEP Chief Scientist of Prof. Joseph Alcamo.

Prof. Joseph Alcamo is Chief Scientist of the United Nations Environment Programme and the first Chief Scientist appointed within the UN system. Since coming to UNEP in 2009, he has been working to strengthen the interface between global science and policy. He has convened groups of scientists to produce quick response reports for policymaking on climate change, air pollution, ozone layer depletion, and food security issues. While at UNEP he has helped found the “Climate and Clean Air Coalition”, an active alliance of governments and NGOs dedicated to fast action on pollutants that cause both air pollution and climate change.

In the accompanied by IESD staff, Prof. Joseph Alcamo visited Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM) and Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB), Mr. LU Xiaochun, Deputy Director of STCSM, Mr. Wu Qizhou, Vice Director of EPB, Mr. SHI Min, Vice Director of International Cooperation Division, EPB, Mr. ZHOU Jun, Vice Director of Pollution Prevention and Control Division, EPB welcomed him and conducted a warm forum.

During this forum, Prof. Joseph introduced the scientific progress in the respect of climate change, air pollution, ozone layer protection, especially discussed in the “Climate and Clean Air Coalition” and short-term air pollutants, and in terms of how to combine science and policy combination. In addition, Prof. Joseph listened the report of Chongming Ecological Island international assessment project, and hopes to visit Chongming later. Prof. Joseph mentioned that it should be continue to strengthen the cooperation with UNEP and Shanghai, which based on the excellent platform of IESD.
