February 18 2013, Nairobi, Kenya, the 27th session of Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) opened at 10am local time. Over 140 world's environment ministers, representatives of social organizations and financial leaders are gathering together for the 5-day meeting under the theme of RIO+20: From Outcome to Implementation.
Aiming at implementing the texts from RIO+20, environment ministers will narrow their divergences on key environment problems by consultation and discussion. "This meeting has to meet some targets on sustainable development and to create a good platform for the upcoming forum." said Mr. Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director. Policy issues on this meeting include environment conditions, international environmental governing, the coordination and cooperation in the UN system and between UN and key organizations, new issues in the environment and development.
Supported by Tongji University, UNEP and UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD), six students from IESD, the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, College of Design and Innovation, School of Transportation Engineering, School of Economics and Management and College of Architecture and Urban Planning are attending the meeting as observers. They are excellent volunteers of the 2012 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCES). In order to help students know about the latest UN environmental policy and working process of international organization, every year IESD selects and recommends student observers to attend.
