On February 19, 2013, the First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) entered its second day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ministerial Consultations addressed emerging policy issues through a series of roundtable discussions on issues such as the financial resources to fulfill UNEP's mandate, science-policy interface and enhanced stakeholder participation. Afternoon discussions focused on UNEP'S contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Committee of the Whole (COW) addressed the state of the environment, which included sustainable consumption and production, chemicals and waste, justice, governance and law as well as the world environment situation.

Other events include the Executive Director's dialogue on green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. The event aimed at building on the Rio+20 outcomes, sharing concrete experiences of countries in using a green economy approach, models of creating new employment and income opportunities for the poor and the major challenges faced by Governments in shifting public and private investment at the necessary scale towards green activities. The role of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) to deliver country-tailored technical assistance and capacity building over a seven year period as part of the UN-wide response to Rio+20 was also discussed.

Press were invited to learn more about the Think Eat Save food waste campaign where food waste activist Tristram Stuart revealed new facts on the scale of food waste in Kenyan farms. The campaign of Think Eat Save, Reduce Your Foodprint is supported by the SAVE FOOD Initiative to reduce food loss and waste along the entire chain of food production and consumption - run by the FAO and trade fair organizer Messe Düsseldorf - and the UN Secretary General’s Zero Hunger Initiatives. The campaign specifically targets food wasted by consumers, retailers and the hospitality industry.

A press conference has been held for the launch of the State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, highlighting that many synthetic chemicals, untested for their disrupting effects on the hormone system, could have significant health implications.
