February 20, 2013, the First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) entered its third day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya. Ministerial Consultations were held on emerging environmental challenges, UNEP's regional presence and responsiveness and emerging policy issues. The Committee of the Whole (COW) addressed international environmental governance, coordination and cooperation within the United Nations system on environmental matters, coordination and cooperation with major groups, and the environment and development agenda.
During the day, student observers from Tongji University also did an exclusive interview with UNEP chief scientist Prof. Joseph Alcamo. Prof. Alcamo and observers discussed how science can help to develop environment-related issues of political decision-making, and pointed out the importance of objective and realistic reports for scientific conclusions reported by the mass media. Furthermore, Prof. Alcamo gave encouragement and expectations to the youth participants of international students of the 2013 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability, which will be held on June 5-8 in Tongji University.
