Closing Ceremony of the 27th Session of GC/GMEF

February 22, 2013, the closing ceremony of the First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was held in UNEP, Kenya.

The president of the governing council summarized the outcome of ministerial consultations during the meeting. A report on the outcome of the Committee of the Whole was presented by the Chair. The delegates adopted decisions on chemicals and waste management, advancing justice, governance and law, the Inter-governmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the state of the environment and the strengthening and upgrading of the UNEP in the context of paragraph 88 of the Rio+20 outcome document.

Other events include a press conference announcing UNEP’s leading of the Climate Technology Centre and Network and the naming of Mongolia, one of the fastest growing economies, as the host country of the World Environment Day 2013. A side event on the topic of "Africa priority flagship programmes in the follow-up to the Rio+20 outcomes", presented the approach and principles for developing and implementing the Regional Flagship Programmes with a view to forging partnerships with other regional and international partners.

 

Student observers from Tongji University advertised the “1000 Environment-Friendly Youth Ambassador Action Program” in UNEP. Students distributed pamphlets, posters and action guidelines to young participants there and spreading the importance of protecting environment. By arousing protecting environment enthusiasm, students asked people to carry out training at local level and encourage them to play an important role in environment protection in their own country to make joint effort around the world.
