Paper on Sustainable Water Resource Development Symposium
Published:11/03/2013

The 12th Sustainable Water Resource Development Symposium was held from June 26-27, 2012, in Ethiopia. Awoke Guadie, PhD student in UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) presented a paper in this symposium. The paper, “Evaluating Factors Affecting Phosphorus Removal and Recovery from Wastewater using Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR)” and this research were carried out under close supervision of Prof. Siqing Xia and highly appreciated by the organizers and audience.

The general objective of the paper was phosphorus removal and recovery as struvite from wastewater. While phosphorus is main cause of eutrophication, it is also limited resources, which is estimated to be lost less than 100 years.

Awoke’s paper tried to address these environmental problems simultaneously by recovering phosphorus as struvite. Struvite, a slow released fertilizer, is currently the focus of research on phosphorus related sustainable problems. The finding was highlighted the viability of phosphorus recovery from wastewater. The paper was published in Ethiopian Journal of Water Science and Technology (page 60-70). Full information about the paper is available in the attachement.
