13 May, 2013-Nairobi, Kenya. Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM) delegation led by Mr. Lu Xiaochun, the Deputy Director, and Prof. Li Fengting, the Deputy Dean of UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development visited the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Headquarters, exchanged views in the progress and strategic plan of Chongming Eco-Island Project, and explored the potential for future cooperation.
Mr. Lu Xiaochun introduced the work progress of Chongming Eco-Island construction and the achievements of Chongming Eco-Island Assessment Project since the MOU singed between STCSM and UNEP. Representatives and focal points from Division of Regional Cooperation and Division of Environmental Policy Implementation, UNEP attended the meeting. UNEP explored for long-term cooperation with Shanghai Municipality in terms of ecosystem management, climate change and fresh water management. Invitation was also made to STCSM to the Second Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connections held in October, 2013, to share construction experience globally.
STCSM delegates attended the Unveiling Ceremony of Demonstrative Cooperation on Drinking Water Treatment between Tongji University and Nairobi Water Company held in UNEP HQs. Representatives from UNEP Regional Office for Africa (ROA), Tongji University and Nairobi Water Company briefed the cooperation history and work progress of this project. Mr. Lu Xiaochun, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Monem (the Regional Team Leader of Ecosystem Management, UNEP-ROA), Prof. Li Fengting, and Mr. Nahason Muguna (the Technical Director of Nairobi Water Company) unveiled the project. Mr. Lu Xiaochun commended, ‘This demonstrative project is the model for South-South cooperation between Chinese universities and African countries as well as the example for technology transfer within the third world. I expect that the two parties should proceed with the practice with consideration of local conditions of Africa.’
Demonstrative Project on Drinking Water Treatment between Tongji University and Nairobi Water Company is under the sub-project 2 ‘Safe Water Supply & Demonstration of Water Resources Use in Typical African Countries’ within the framework of MOST–UNEP Technical Cooperation on Water Resources in Africa. This project is implemented by Tongji University and other organizations focusing on improvement of water treatment process and chemicals.
