The China-African ministerial dialogue was one of the big side events on the third day of UNEA. The event was attended by the Chinese minister of environment Mr. Zhou Shengxian and more than 50 African environmental ministries and representatives. The conference was opened with remarks from UNEP’s director General Mr. Achim Steiner. On his opening remarks, he noted to further strengthen the trilateral cooperation between China, Africa and UNEP on technology transfer and capacity building. Mr. Zhou on his part expressed China’s willingness to assist African countries in accomplishing development while protecting the environment. The African ministries voiced on the need of support from China for sustainable development. After the ministerial dialogue, Tongji University students interviewed several environment ministers. Among the ministers Madagascar environmental minister was one to mention. He stressed on the importance of such meeting between the two countries environmental ministers for achieving mutual development. When it comes to cooperation with China, the minister of Madagascar put, there is much ongoing collaboration currently on different issues and this collaboration must continue strongly. Furthermore, the minister encourages the promise made by Mr. Zhou Shengxian that Chinese companies operating in Africa won’t make any adverse pollution during construction, operation and decommissioning of the projects.

The student observers also attend the symposium on Financing Green Economy. On the symposium the panelists emphasized the need to provide a platform for raising awareness and conversations regarding the financing required for greening the economy. During the symposium, Mr. Jingdong Wang, vice president of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), highlighted that long-term green investment financing has its own risk, but without this long-term financing, it is difficult to accomplish Sustainable Development. On the afternoon, UNEP-SIDS (Small Island Developing States) Partnership and SIDS Ministerial Consultation has been held. On the side event, it was emphasized that SIDS specific challenges and opportunities for sustainable development and partnerships which UNEP can assist and contribute.
