In the afternoon of October 16, Professor Stephen Belcher, the director of the UK Met Office’s Hadley Center, and Ms. Kirstine Dale, accompanied by Mr. Edward Baker, Ms. Ge Yao, and Ms. Xu Jiawei from the Climate Change and Energy Division of the UK Consulate-General in Shanghai, visited China Meteorological Administration (CMA) - Tongji University key open laboratory “urban responses to climate change in Shanghai” in Tongji University. Some directors of the core teams of the lab were present in the symposium, including Prof. Tong Xiaohua, Prof. Yu Peng, Prof. Xu Peng, Prof. Jiang Dahe, expert on atmospheric science in College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Dr. Wang Xin, vice Dean of IESD, and Dr. Fang Ping, the coordinator of the construction office of the lab.
Dr. Wang Xin presided over the symposium. Prof. Stephen Belcher briefly introduced the main idea of the “Climate science beyond the IPCC5th report”, and explained in details the key parts of the research in the four stages of the issue of climate change; Dr. Wang Xin introduced the background of the lab, research directions and goals, and the interdisciplinary research teams, etc; Prof. Xu Peng on behalf of the urban architecture energy conservation and artificial climate simulation research team, Prof. Yu Peng on behalf of the marine science and climate change research team, and Prof. Tong Xiaohua on behalf of surveying and mapping science and climate change, respectively presented the research results and further research ideas of different disciplines associated with climate change. Prof. Jiang Dahe thought that the carbon emissions curve drawn since 1970 in “Climate science beyond the IPCC5th report” released in 2014 is unfair to developing countries, and exchanged views with Prof. Stephen Belcher. The Chinese and British experts timely gave feedback and communicated with each other in the entire process, making the symposium progress in a cordial and warm atmosphere.
Great gratitude also goes to Mr. Edward Baker, Ms. Ge Yao, and Ms. Xu Jiawei who have provided much help for the symposium. The communication and exchange enhanced understanding between each other and laid a good foundation for further cooperation.
The lab created by Tongji University and Shanghai Meteorological Bureau (SMA), is committed to be a high-level, internationalized and open platform for the communication of research on urban response to climate change, advocating active interdisciplinary research. We welcome experts and scholars interested in response to climate change from various disciplines to jointly contribute to solving the problem of climate change facing human beings.
