The Workshop on Planning for Greener Citiesand South-South Cooperation in Africa will be held in Tongji University. Thisworkshop will be hosted by UNEP, UN-Habitat and Tongji University, with thesupport from Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. UNEP-Tongji Instituteof Environment for Sustainable Development serves the organization andcoordination of the workshop. Invited by the organizer, Mr. Pierre Quiblier willvisit Shanghai Key Lab of Chemical Assessment and Sustainability, and deliver alecture on “Integrated Health and Environment Observatory to Predict, Preventand Reduce Chemicals Risks in Africa: An Overview”. Prof. Zhifen Lin from Collegeof Environmental Science and Engineering and Prof. Yanghui Zhang fromDepartment of Chemistry, Tongji University will deliver lectures aboutchemicals assessment and managements, respectively. The lecture will be hostedat Room 901, Zonghe Building, Tongji University, at 9:00 a.m., 20 March.
Pierre Quiblier is Programme Officer at theUnited Nations Environment Programme. Since December 2006, he has beenappointed to the Geneva based Chemicals Branch to improve the cross-sectorialgovernance for the sound management of chemicals at the national and locallevels and to promote the incorporation of national sound management ofchemicals into national development plans and strategies.
Within his functions he developed andcoordinated the chemicals Branch contribution into the strategic exercise ofUNEP particularly as it relates to the harmful substances and hazardouswaste. He developed the UNEP-UNDPPartnership Initiative on the mainstreaming of sound management of chemicalsinto development plans and policies. He managed and coordinated the UNEP globalpublication of the Global Chemicals Outlook: Towards Sound Management ofchemicals. A first comprehensive reportof its kind which not only alerts the international community on the rapidlychanging nature and size of the chemicals related challenges, but also outlinesthe opportunities deriving from a sound management of chemicals
He also ensures liaison with WHO andundertake related environment and health functions in view of strengthening thecooperation in areas of common interest. He led the development and organization, and joined the UNEP-WHOScientific and Technical Committee for the first inter-Ministerial Health andEnvironment Conference in Africa held in Libreville, Gabon, 26-29 June 2008. Asmember of the WHO-UNEP Joint Task Team for the implementation of the LibrevilleDeclaration on Health and Environment in Africa, he also organized the 2ndinter-ministerial Conference held in Luanda, Angola, 23-26 November 2010.
