Professor Zhang has been devoted to scientific research on water treatment and resource recovery for a long time. To handle great challenges of techniques such as “high energy consumption, low efficiency and serious secondary pollution” in traditional treatment of organic waste water with high concentration, he has led his research group to make efforts to “turn sole pollution treatment into waste resource recovery” and creatively put forward “ a brand new way of resource recovery in organic waste water with high concentration by Anaerobic-Micro-algae combination” for the first time both at home and abroad, which helped him win the second prize of National Innovation Prize in 2013. What’s more, his original method of “new technique of urban sewage treatment in coupling style”  to address investment on nitrogen and phosphorus removal of urban sewage and high operation cost, assisted him in getting the second prize of National Innovation Prize in 2008, thanks to its economy, high efficiency, less space and easy operation management. All these research results have been extensively put into use in many provinces and cities in China and other countries like Kenya and Algeria making great contributions to reducing regional pollution.

Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, founded by He Shanheng, Leung Kau-kui, He Tian and Li Guowei in 1994, HK patriotic financiers, aims to encourage Chinese scientists and boost scientific development and innovation in China. This award is granted once a year, including “Achievement Award of Science and Technology”“Progress Award of Science and Technology” and “Innovation Award of Science and Technology”.
