Wu Jiang hosted the Global University Partnership on Environment and Sustainabil...

From Sept.13th to 15th, 2016, the GUPES, Global University Partnership on Environment and Sustainability steering committee meeting was held in Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Executive Vice President of Tongji University, Prof. Wu Jiang as the Chairman of the steering committee hosted the meeting. The Deputy Dean of UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, also the Vice Dean of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the representatives of the member universities discussed the development tendency, the structure of the organization and the main activities held in the past few years of the partnership. They also probed into the possibility of strengthening the partnership’s function of network and working as a platform through science research and training programs to reinforce the bond between the members.
The Global University Partnership on Environment and Sustainability is launched by Tongji and UNEP, of which the Conference of Establishment was held in Tongji in June, 2012, with Wu Jiang as the Chairman. This partnership is aimed at boosting the integration of universities in the area of sustainable education, research, communication and management, strengthening the sustainability of the universities’ infrastructure, operation and management. What’s more, it also hammers at promoting the enthusiasm of students attending the sustainable activities both inside and outside school, and to move forward a single step, lifting the quality, perfecting policies and practices of universities in developing education.
Besides, Wu Jiang attended the International Conference of Sustainable Development Education organized by MIT. He later made a keynote report, introducing Tongji experience of the education of the sustainable development. This network is started by University of South Florida, with Tongji in its membership. The goal of this partnership is to carry out training and research in diachronic education of sustainable development. So far Tongji University has already published a monograph about the education of sustainable development with this university.
