1.       Backgroundand Introduction

UNEnvironment-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, hereinafter referred to as “IESD”, jointly established by United Nations Environment Programme andTongji University in 2002, hasserved as a strategic think-tank for UN Environment, an inter-disciplinaryplatform for Tongji University and contributed significantly to environment andsustainable development from three main pillars – education, research andoutreach. IESD has been mandate to mainstream environment and sustainabledevelopment into higher education, to promote research, education and South-SouthCooperation on the environment and sustainability, to enhance the service ofscience and technology to policy-making and implementation, and to providetailored solutions to the Southern countries. With support from UN Environment,Ministry of Education of China and Tongji University, IESD launched theInternational Master’s and Doctoral Programme since 2006.

By 2018, IESD had enrolled 464students from 83 countries.

TongjiUniversity ranks A+ in the discipline of Environment according to the recentevaluation by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Among the 155 universitiesthat were evaluated only 3 universities rank A+.

This programaims to equip candidates with an integrated environment management vision andleadership ability at the local, national and regional levels on sustainabledevelopment. Students are expected to master various concepts and gainknowledge on economic progress, social systems, environmental protection andresource conservation issues. The three pillars of human, environment and theeconomy form the basis of the program.

2.      Aboutthe Programmes

A. The following programmes are being offered

(1) 2019-2021 Master Programme onEnvironmental Management and Sustainable Development (Major in EnvironmentalScience)  

(2) 2019-2021 Master Programme onEnvironmental Engineering (Major in Environmental Engineering)

(3) 2019-2023 Doctoral Programme onEnvironmental Management and Sustainable Development (Major in EnvironmentalScience and Engineering)

B. Language: All the professional courses are taught in English. Although, Chinese languagecourses would be offered additionally.

C. Theprogram consists of Regular Classes, groupdiscussions, Group/Personal Presentation, Field Trips and Intensive Lectures fromsenior experts from other universities, UN Environment and other internationalorganizations.

4.      MentorSystem and Research Group

The applicants should contact the professors in TongjiUniversity via website or recommendation by IESD according their researchinterest during the application process. Theacceptance letter by the professor (to be the mentor) is very crucial to getadmission and the scholarship applied for.

During the study in TongjiUniversity, all the students will conduct their research and other academicactivities under the supervision of their mentors.
