Tongji Delegation Attends UNEA-4 and Launches Important Reports

       4-15March 2019, Nairobi - the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-4)has been held and attended by environment ministers worldwide including H.E.Xie Zhenhua Special Representative for Climate Change of China, Vice Ministerof Ecology and Environment Mr. Zhao Yingmin. The topic of this year is"Innovative Solution for Environmental Challenges and sustainable consumptionand production," focusing on consumption and production. The event aimedto reach several important agreements, appealing to take urgent actions in caseof new challenges, in order to mitigate the current environmental problems. UN Environment ActingExecutive Director Ms. Joyce Msuya and H.E. Xie Zhenhuawarmly greeted Tongji students and appreciated their contribution in the fieldof environment and encouraged them to continue the excellent work.

Tongji University participated as an invited speaker and studentobservers. Executive Vice President of Tongji university Prof. Jiang Wuaddressed at the closing ceremony and speak as a panelist on how the universityshould involve in Environmental education training.

During the conference, Tongji University and Un-Habitat alsohosted the launch the Report on “Making cities sustainable throughrehabilitation polluted rivers: lesson from China and other countries” and thepre-launche of the report on “Net Zero Carbon Village Planning Guidelines forthe Yangtze River Delta Region in China”. This launch event was attended by,Ms. Maimunah Sharif, Executive Director UN-Habitat.

Tongjistudent observers in UNEA-4

The Tongji student delegation attended the Youth Alliance “Dreamto Action” expressing their views on the importance of youth involvement inachieving the SDG.

IESD was established in 2002 jointly by UN-Environment andTongji Unviersity. Through IESD platform, Tongji has sent many outstandinginterns and observers to the headquarters of United Nations EnvironmentProgramme and of United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UNEP Office forAsia and the Pacific, UNEP Office for Africa, and major internationalconferences including climate change conferences and UN Environmental Assembly.
