Academician DING Yihui, Director of KLCMACC Academic Committee, Special Adviser on Climate Change of CMA, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Prof. WU Jiang, Deputy Director of KLCMACC Academic Committee, Executive Vice President of Tongji University; Prof. JIANG Zhihong, Member of KLCMACC Academic Committee, Vice President of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology; Researcher SONG Lili, Public Meteorological Service Center in CMA; Prof. XU Guiquan, Senior Engineer of Shanghai Water Authority Planning and Designing Institution; Researcher XU Ying, National Climate Center of CMA; Prof. WEN Jiahong, Shanghai Normal University; Mr. LEI Xiaotu, Deputy Director of Shanghai Meteorological Bureau; Ms WANG Yan, Director of Science Development Department of Shanghai Meteorological Bureau; Prof. LI Fengting, Head of KLCMACC, Executive Deputy Director of UNEP-Tongji Institution of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD); Prof. TAN Jianguo, Senior Engineer of Shanghai Climate Center and other researchers attended the meeting.

Prof. LI Fengting and Prof. Tan Jianguo reported KLCMACC current acceptance progress and next-step establishment plan at the beginning, and hosted the opening ceremony of KLCMACC. Academician DING Yihui, the director of KLCMACC Academic Committee congratulated the outstanding achievement that KLCMACC completed in this year open fund programme. He also pointed out that in the future, more emphasis can be focused on the character of urbanization, paying attention to the impact of complex disasters from urban climate change, meanwhile, with the support of Tongji University, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau and United Nations Environment Programme, KLCMACC is expected to rise its tone on a worldwide level. Afterwards, Prof. WU Jiang mentioned that core climate change issues should be solved from three aspects, which are focus, open and intersection. Taking a step further, climate governance should move from monitoring to adaptation, especially formulating related policies and regulations based on research outcomes, in addition to announcing in the world. The members of the academic committee recommended highly on KLCMACC’s prominent achievements. Therefore, members came to an agreement that the academic conference will be held biennially, inviting experts and professors from universities, government and enterprises, so that practical progress will be made on climate adaptation.

For the next stage, the KLCMACC will focus more on the research direction and content. Taking Shanghai as an example, Shanghai will carry out the research on comprehensive disaster issues in mega cities, striving to expand its influence, and to build the KLCMACC as a pioneer on both domestic and global scale.

Afterwards, the KLCMACC held the academic forum of Cities’ Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change and 2019 annual academic conference. With the topics on monitoring and forecasting urban climate change, as well as discussing impact assessment and adaptation strategies. More than 40 experts and scholars from Tongji University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, Anhui Meteorological Bureau, Zhejiang Meteorological Bureau, Hangzhou Meteorological Bureau and other universities and scientific research institutes attended the conference and made high-level academic reports.

It is reported that the construction of KLCMACC was started in October 2015 and passed the acceptance inspection on December 5, 2018. The laboratory has established a high-level academic committee with 13 members; a scientific research team with 48 people facing three research directions, which are urban climate change monitoring and prediction, climate impact assessment, and Cities Mitigation and adaptation; a series of operating regulation such as "authority-rotation system", quarterly regular meeting and open fund. At the same time, the laboratory actively explores interdisciplinary cooperation that can integrate meteorological departments to key disciplines in universities, and gradually builds up laboratory’s influence as a world-famous center of cities’ mitigation and adaptation, and a platform for global cooperation and communication.
