 UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME Intern for UNEP South-South Cooperation

____________________________________________________________

Duration:   3-6 months

Location:         Nairobi, Kenya

Agency:

   United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)

Background:

UNEP is  developing the South-South Cooperation  (SSC) Exchange Mechanism .The Mechanism will be hosted online, and will be one of the first web platforms specifically concentrating on SSC in the field of environment and sustainable development. The Mechanism will document a broad range of case studies and case stories on SSC primary focusing on projects or initiatives being implemented by UNEP and/or its partners (although other prominent SSC case stories with strong environmental linkages will also be featured). The Mechanism will share success stories; best practices; lessons learned and promote events, news  and information on SSC. It will generate more public awareness about SSC and provide an interactive platform for blogs, discussions and social networking (that will be moderated by UNEP).

To support the Mechanism, UNEP’s Division of Regonal Cooperation (DRC) has begun establishing SSC networks with relevant UN agencies and international environmental organizations. These organizations are actively supporting UNEP’swork by offering case studies to be featured on the Mechanism. This content will contribute to the overall diversity and relevance of the Mechanism in the different thematic areas of environment and sustainable development.

Currently, two colleagues are working on making the Mechanism a “living?resouce and are engaged in the following:

-        Identifying SSC initiatives, events, success stories, established  best practices, and lessons learned for integration into  the Mechanism;

-        Creating networks with individuals and organizations with relevant SSC information for sourcing Mechanism materials;

-        Collaborating with partners (both within and external to UNEP and UN) to produce case studies and stories highlighting environmental SSC initiatives;

-       Working with UNEP web designers to finalise layout, features, and content of the Mechanism prior to the launch of the Mechanism in May 2012 at the UN General Assembly High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation in New York; and

-       Assisting with the preparation of video/print materials and event logistics for the launch of the Mechanism.
