Mrs. Irina BOKOVA, born on 12 July 1952 in Sofia(Bulgaria), is the incumbent Director-General of UNESCO since 15 November 2009. She was member of the Bulgarian Parliament, minister of foreign affairs, and ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to France, Monaco and UNESCO, personal representative of the president of Bulgaria to the Organization international de la Francophonie(2005-2009).

 

As a distinguished politician, Ms. BOKOVA has worked to overcome European divisions and to foster the dialogue, diversity, human dignity and human rights. Her profound knowledge and rich experience in international relations are great assets for UNESCO to implement its universal mandate towards the Millennium Development Goals. The World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region(Shanghai), hosted by Tongji University, as a category center under the auspice of UNESCO is strongly supported under her leadership. She thinks highly educational and capable building activities at national and regional level, and attaches great importance to the initiatives of China towards the worldwide peace and development.
