Li Fengting studied chemistry in Beijing Institute of Technology and Shandong University from 1982 to1989, and earned PhD degree from Nanjing Univeristy in 1997. Prof. Li has published more than 330 research papers in peer review journals, with H-index up to 41 , and was granted 92 patents in China and US. He has formulated 20 national standards in the field of water treatment and chemical industry. He published 4 reports with UNEP and UN-Habitant as the editor-in-chief. He was awarded National Award of Education for his contribution to the international education in 2010 and 2018. He earned Innovation Award by Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Shanghai Government, respectively.. He was awarded the UN Special Award for South-South Cooperation for the contribution in water resources management and water treatment in Africa in past 20 years.
In 1997, Li Fengting joined Tongji University, and engaged in the research of wastewater treatment t and education for sustainable development. He studied in University of Georgia, Berlin Free University and Institute of Advanced Sustainability Study (Chaired by Prof. Klaus Töpfer, former Under-Secretary General of United Nations and the Executive Director of UNEP) as visiting scholar. In 2004, invited by Dr. Klaus Töpfer, , Li set foot on the land of Africa for the first time. Over the next decade, in order to improve the local access to safe portable water, he went to Africa for more than 60 times, to Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Libya, Egypt and other countries.

In recent years, Li has led multi-disciplinary teams in the areas of environment science, civil engineering, transportation engineering, urban planning, material science, etc. to promote transdisciplinary education, policy research and promote South-South Cooperation.
The year 2018 marked the 60th anniversary of China-Africa cooperation, 60 important figures were selected by China and Africa for bilateral cooperation. Li was selected into the list because of his contribution to environmental cooperation, and became a 'water envoy' for spreading water treatment technology in Africa.
