Dr. Xu W.Y. earned her PhD in Engineering Science from the Russian University of Chemical Technology (RUCT) in 2000 with a scholarship awarded by Ministry of Education of China for the outstanding academic performance.

She first majored in glass technology, inorganic silicate materials, then in environmental science & engineering. In 2002, Dr. Xu patented the “catalyzed Fe-Cu process” after two years of post-doctoral research. The catalyzed Fe/Cu technology is now applied as the core technology in the reconstruction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Taopu Industrial Park in Shanghai.

From October 2004 to March 2005 Dr. Xu worked at Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. She successfully conducted the pilot test of the science and technology cooperation project of China and German “Electrochemical wastewater disinfection” there.

In May 2010 Dr. Xu was selected for Special Award for Canadian Studies and sent to Canada on an assignment from June to July of the same year by Canadian Government.

Dr. Xu has over 30 research papers published in nuclear journals in China and internationally. Ten of these publications were included in SCI and EI. Additionally, five inventions of hers were patented.

Dr. Xu is fluent in English and Russian. She frequently does presentations in English at international conferences. Currently she teaches the course “Environmental Project Planning and Management” in English at UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development.

Since 2003 Dr. Xu has been working as an associate professor and advisor of MA students at School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University.

◆Main research interests:

1. Wastewater treatment by physico-chemical processes

2. Electrochemical disinfection of water and wastewater

Over the last 5 years she undertook or participated in over 10 wastewater treatment research projects.
