Background

The Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (APLP) is an annual flagship programme co-hosted by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Tongji University since 2004, aiming to build capacity for emerging leaders from the Asia Pacific region on holistic sustainability thinking and evidence-based approaches for effective action. The Leadership Programme supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda – Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunity for all, and other goals reflected in each year’s theme.

Over 400 emerging leaders from 45 countries and organizations have benefited from this annual leadership program at IESD, of which more than 30 countries are from the Asia-Pacific. The leadership program has also attracted participants from other regions, such as North America, Africa, and Europe, who are keen to learn more about the dynamic Asia Pacific region, and formed a global APLP alumni network.


At the 20th anniversary of IESD, 2022 APLP Asia-Pacific Sustainability and Circular Economy Leadership Course will focus on circular economy, business innovation, and sustainable urban planning, as well as water-energy-food nexus. With an instructor team from UN agencies, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, SystainabilityAsia and Tongji University, the course offers four modules on the foundations of, and relationship that exist between sustainability, sustainable development, and circular economy., from the four dimensions of economic, social, environmental, and cultural refinement sustainable development goals, And the Pyramid Sustainability model is used to interpret sustainable development leadership.
