2022 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability
Published:31/03/2022

Sustainable development is now the core of the global development agenda. Countries all over the world are taking active actions to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality as early as possible. The ongoing pandemic has a profound impact on people’s health, social economy and the environment, which exacerbated the challenges brought by the existing climate crisis, biodiversity loss and pollution.

In order to deliver the United Nations Decade 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, ambitious actions in the next 10 years are urgently required to accelerate the adoption of sustainable solutions that meet the major challenges in the world. Sustainable innovation and green finance and technology should be further promoted and young people need to be provided with more space to lead a vital role in communities and cities.

2022 World Environment Day will focus on Only One Earth, which highlights the urgent need for people to drive change through policies and their own choices, to practice cleaner and greener lifestyles and to ensure a harmonious coexistence with nature. The Earth is our only homeland and sustainable development is our only way forward. It will only succeed if everyone, particularly the young generation, plays an active part.

Supported by the United Environment Programme, Tongji University, Agricultural Bank of China, Beijing Environment Foundation for Young Talents, and Xinhua News Agency, the International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCES) has been successfully held for ten sessions. More than 3,000 young students from over 50 countries gathered at Tongji University for in-depth discussions and field trips, brainstorming on various environmental and development issues, and declared the Tongji Global Youth Declaration. This makes the conference a global event focusing on future leaders and one of the sustainable development youth summits with the most participating countries. By encouraging students to analyze and solve wicked environmental issues themselves, ISCES promotes information and idea exchange and cultivates future leaders of sustainable development.

This year’s ISCES will focus on Only One Earth, the theme of the World Environment Day. Young students from all over the world will discuss on four major topics: Human Health, Circular Economy, Climate Change, and Smart Environment by engaging in a series of activities including lectures, academic reports, oral presentations. Prizes for the best and most popular teams will be rewarded at the Forum.
