6 June 2021, Shanghai – The Closing and Awarding Ceremony of the 2021 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCES) and the Global Environment Solution Challenge was held online. Nearly 300 students from over 100 universities in 33 countries participated in teams, and compete under the theme Ecosystem Restoration and four sub tracks, namely Ecosystem Restoration and Climate Change, Ecosystem Restoration and Human Health, Ecosystem Restoration and Circular Economy, Ecosystem Restoration and Green Cities. Over 1000 student observers watched and voted online. The judging committee consists of experts from UN agencies, International NGOs, research institutions and private sectors.

Teams from universities including University of Novi Sad, Fujian Normal University, Tongji University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Korea University, University of Southampton, and others, won the prizes and most popular teams in each track.

In the awarding ceremony, Prof. WU Jiang, Dean of UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) gave the closing remarks. “2021-2030 is the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration,” he said, “and in this movement from exploiting nature to recreating, re-imagining and restoring nature, the young generation is and will be the leader. They will drive the innovation through nature.”

The International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCES) is an annual event organized by UNEP and Tongji University.
